My name is Jools & I have to create a blog for my course Theatrical & Media Make up. I am now in my 2nd year doing Level 3 work. I love doing special effects & hope to work in L.A one day or with Film4 working on films, t.v dramas & so on. Hopefully this course will help me along the way.
We learn how to make basic cuts, bruises, burns & fatalities & move on to aging for theatre & film, body painting, Theatre make up & much more.
First of all on my course we studied Basic burns using gelatin, liquid latex, grease paint, talcum powder, congealed blood & liquid blood.
For burns we had to research fire, 1st, 2nd & 3rd degree burns & their differences.
Here is my friend Lucy modeling some gelatin burns. We didn't have enough time to finish & photograph it properly.
To create a gelatin burn you need congealed blood, gelatin & grease paint.
First of all paint the desired place with red & yellow grease paint. Then place a bag of gelatin in a bowl & pour boiling water over the gelatin & leave for 3 minutes. Once the gelatin has melted some in the bag using a a spatula smooth the gelatin over the paint. This process has to be done quickly or the gelatin will dry fast & may create shapes that wont help the burn look realistic. When the gelatin has dried on the skin add more paint & congealed blood.
Here are some 3rd degree burns. 3rd degree burns basically cook the flesh.

First paint the skin with red grease paint then using a sponge add a layer of liquid latex. Using a hair dryer dry the latex. Once dry use a blusher brush & dust with Talcum powder. Then add up to seven more layers of the latex repeating drying & powdering.
On the last layer when the latex is still wet, place tissue in lumps & bumps & continue to add latex. Once dry & powdered use a toothpick to pull apart the latex on some of the tissue lumps. In the open latex add Petroleum Jelly & congealed blood to add a blister effect.
I loved doing burns they were fun to do. Before applying latex you have to test the skin 24 hours before to asure no reactions. If a reaction or allergy does occur contact your doctor asap. these are great fun for halloween & keep my friends entertained for ages :)
